Activism is all about promoting political or social change.
When people are fighting for change they can become overwhelmed because major outcomes often take time and can go undocumented for years.
While our desire to bring about a better future for ourselves and our children is at the forefront of our minds, it is important for us to not only look at the challenges ahead, but also the positive outcomes that take place along the way.
Especially for the sake of our mental health and our ability to keep going. Here are a few ways to incorporate positivity into your content, life, and community.
Document the wins of the movement
First and foremost, start documenting the wins of the movement. As you hear about policy changes, new laws, and anything else that highlights the fact that the movement is making a difference, let others know.
Inform yourself so you’ll feel understood. This will help you put the bigger picture into perspective until the ultimate goal is accomplished.
If you’re a blogger, you can keep a running document that you update to categorize wins as you hear about them, either through a blog post or via a social media platform that you can edit, like Facebook.
Vloggers can create quick videos on YouTube or IGTV to keep their audience aware of progress.
Share positive quotes and affirmations
There is something powerful about hearing from people who overcame a tremendous amount of adversity but kept going. When you share positive quotes and affirmations, look for words from wise people who exemplify the struggle that is being fought for.
Here are three examples that are encouraging:
“It’s up to all of us – Black, white, everyone – no matter how well-meaning we think we might be, to do the honest, uncomfortable work of rooting it out. It starts with self-examination and listening to those whose lives are different from our own. It ends with justice, compassion, and empathy that manifests in our lives and on our streets.” Michelle Obama
“I’m wise enough to know that we can’t fight for the long haul if we don’t ensure our mental health is in place.” Tamika Mallory, Until Justice
“If you believe in a cause, be willing to stand up for that cause with a million people or by yourself” -Otis S. Johnson “A Quote From From “N-Word” To Mr. Mayor”
Share positive news stories
There are a few sites dedicated to sharing positive news stories about Black people. Share these stories in your posts and on social media.
Although these are not mainstream news sites, the stories are real and can help alter the overly negative images that often are prevalent when people of color are mentioned in the media.
Share personal insights or changes
Give other people a chance to hear how the struggle has impacted your life. As you learn and gain understanding, share those lessons with other people. Your audience is invested in your story, so make it personal.
Spotlight a local change agent
Interview someone local who is making a positive impact within your community.
Earlier, I mentioned that supporters of the movement should share lessons or moments of growth. If there has been a person who has directly helped you better understand the situation, then contact them for an interview and let the person know that you were enlightened by their words.
Amplify marginalized voices
Support those struggling for rights by sharing their content or content that supports them. You can add a quote to your blog post, retweet them, or re-share their account in your InstaStories. Food bloggers can share African-American inspired recipes and share a positive message about its origins.
Additionally, you could highlight a book written by a Black author or share a service, product, or course that is provided by a person of color. Next, be open to and seek out opportunities to collaborate with a person of color on a post or project.
YOU can positively impact and uplift the community. You can be a light.
